Elevated Views

The trails in the GTM Research Reserve and the adjacent Guana River Wildlife Management Area (WMA) allow birders easy access and are accented by two observation towers. The Capo Creek Observation Tower provides breathtaking views of the salt marshes along Capo Creek, a tidal creek feeding into the Tolomato River. The Guana Lake Observation Tower also offers scenic views. Use the Purple, Red, and Blue Trails in the GTM Reserve and loop onto a trail in the Guana River WMA to reach the towers.

The tower on Hammock Road is an excellent spot for photographing and observing birds.

Expert Tips

✓ Leave No Trace
Keep the “natural” in natural areas by packing out everything you bring in.

✓ Let Wildlife Eat Naturally
Let birds and animals eat their natural foods. Animals may become conditioned to handouts, eventually losing their fear of people or vehicles.

✓ Support Local Conservation
Support the regional Riverkeeper by purchasing products featuring a Kingfisher bird at stjohnsriverkeeper.org.

✓ Climb for the View
Take a deep breath and climb the tower — the view is worth the effort!

✓ Stay Hydrated
The wait for the perfect birding sight can be lengthy. A drink from your reusable water bottle can help make the wait more comfortable.

✓ Listen to Nature
Save the tunes for later — playing music can scare the birds away. Enjoy the natural sounds while you wait.
