Estuary Escapes

Located at the north end of the Guana River Wildlife Management Area, just west of Mickler’s Landing, this is one of the easiest ways to get out on the water. The North Guana Outpost is steps away and offers kayaks, paddleboards, life jackets, coolers, and nearly everything you need for a great day on the water.

Launching from this area depends on water levels, which can vary, so be sure to check in advance. Once you’re on the water, the winding brackish estuary provides a unique and beautiful experience, with plenty of wildlife to spot along the way.

If you’re new to kayaking or paddleboarding, don’t worry—local outfitters offer guided tours and lessons, ensuring you can enjoy this special ecosystem even if you’re a beginner.

Expert Tips

✓ Prepare for Safety and Comfort
Bring a hat, sunscreen (preferably free of oxybenzone and octinoxate), water in a refillable bottle, and wear comfortable clothing that can get wet. Consider a waterproof phone case and sun-protective clothing. Beat the heat by getting on the water early—mornings are also when birds are most active.

✓ Protect the Environment
Stick to designated launch areas and avoid disturbing sensitive vegetation or wildlife habitats. Keep the “natural” in natural areas by packing out everything you bring in.

✓ Plan Ahead
If you are renting equipment, book ahead to save time and ensure availability.

✓ Wildlife Watching
While on the water, watch for rosette spoonbills, otters, and fish—the clear waters make spotting wildlife easier.

✓ Great Learning Spot
The north side of the Guana Dam offers calm, walk-in waters with no boat traffic, making it an ideal spot to learn paddleboarding or stand-up paddleboarding.
