North Beach Overlook

Walk in History and Waves

North Beach in the GTM Research Reserve offers long stretches of pristine, undeveloped beachfront. Parking is typically easy in the GTM North Lot, and after crossing A1A, a boardwalk provides convenient beach access.

About halfway along the boardwalk, a right turn leads to an overlook with sweeping views north and south, showcasing the beauty of this special area. Locals love sharing the view Ponce de León saw in 1513—especially at sunrise, described as “spectacular” and “magical.”

The beach provides 4 miles of open shoreline, perfect for a natural hiking experience. For a longer trek, continue up to Mickler’s Landing and back for an 11-mile hike. Don’t miss the 15-foot Ponce de León statue, interpretive signage, and historical marker commemorating his April 3, 1513, claim of La Florida for Spain.

Expert Tips

✓ Plan Your Visit
The GTM parking lots can fill quickly on weekends and holidays, so arrive early in the day for easier access. Sunrise or sunset visits make the beach hike even more special. Visiting during off-peak hours helps avoid crowds and allows for a quieter experience.

✓ Protect the Environment
Stay on designated paths to protect sensitive plants, animals, and beach ecosystems. Keep the “natural” in “natural areas” by packing out everything you bring in. Enjoy the beach during slower periods of the day and season to limit crowding.

✓ Learn & Explore
Take time to read the informational placards at the vista overlook to enhance your understanding of the area. Stop by the GTM Environmental Education Center (9 a.m.–4 p.m.) or the Ponte Vedra Visitor Center at 200 Solana Road to learn more about local history, including the “30 degree, 8 minute” latitude where Ponce de Leon landed.

✓ Support the Reserve
Consider donating or becoming a member of the GTM Research Reserve. Your support helps protect, research, and educate others about this unique area. Participate in the GTM Beach Cleanup on the fourth Saturday of each month at 9:30 a.m. at the Visitor Center to help preserve this special environment.
