Catch the Surf

Start your morning barefoot on the sand, feeling the waves roll in, and casting your line into the surf — a truly unique Florida fishing experience. For many anglers, the combination of the ocean sounds, passing birds, and soft sand creates a peaceful, memorable way to connect with nature.

The South Ponte Vedra Beach Recreation Area, located about two miles south of the GTM Research Reserve on Highway A1A, offers easy beach access, parking, pavilions, and picnic tables. Parking is somewhat limited and can fill quickly, so arriving early is recommended. The pavilions and picnic areas provide a great spot to relax while honing your surf fishing skills.

For the best experience, go early in the morning when the beach is less crowded. Incoming tides are ideal for “reading the surf,” giving you the best chance to catch fish while enjoying the serene beach environment. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or trying surf fishing for the first time, this is a must-do activity during your Ponte Vedra Beach visit.

Expert Tips

✓ Arrive Early
Get to the Recreation Area early — parking will be more available, the fish are most active, and fewer families on the beach create a peaceful environment.

✓ Dress and Protect Yourself
Bring a hat, sunscreen, water, and wear comfortable clothing that can get wet. Consider using a waterproof phone case if you plan to carry your phone.

✓ Protect Your Gear
Bring a PVC surf pipe to hold your rod and protect your gear from rising tides and breaking surf. Make sure no fishing materials or trash fall into the water.

✓ Leave No Trace
Use trash receptacles for garbage and recycle whenever possible.

✓ Ocean-Friendly Sun Protection
Enjoy the water safely by wearing a hat and using ocean-safe sunscreen. Stick to sunscreens free of oxybenzone and octinoxate, two common chemical ingredients that can harm marine life.
