A Legacy of Golf in Ponte Vedra

Golf is more than just a game in Ponte Vedra. For nearly a century, it has been a defining part of the area’s culture — but it wasn’t always this way.

The birth of Ponte Vedra’s golf tradition

In the early 1900s, the region was known for its mineral deposits and mining activity, earning the name “Mineral City.” As demand for minerals began to fade, a new chapter in Ponte Vedra’s story unfolded.

In 1928, the opening of the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club, along with its first golf course, ushered in a new era. The area soon became a premier resort destination, where the soothing sounds of the ocean and the thrill of the links would attract travelers from far and wide.

Today, the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club is home to two private courses — the Ocean Course and the Lagoon Course — each offering its own unique challenges.

TPC Sawgrass

From resort to global golf destination

A game-changing addition arrived in 1980: Ponte Vedra became home to the iconic Tournament Players Club (TPC) Sawgrass. The venue put the coastal community on the global golfing map and is now home to the PGA Tour headquarters and hosts THE PLAYERS Championship.

TPC Sawgrass features two courses: the Stadium Course and Dye’s Valley Course. The Stadium Course introduced a unique design at the time, with mounds for spectators to stand and watch like a stadium. Its signature island green 17th hole remains one of the most challenging holes in the country. These courses are open to the public, allowing golfers to play in the footsteps of the pros.
