A Legacy of Golf in Ponte Vedra

Getting the Ball Rolling
In the early 1900s the region was known for its mineral deposits and mining activity, earning the name “Mineral City.” However, as the demand for minerals began to fade, a new chapter in Ponte Vedra’s story was about to unfold. In 1928, the opening of the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club, along with its first golf course, ushered in a new era. The area soon became a resort destination, where the soothing sounds of the ocean and the thrill of the links would attract travelers from far and wide. Today, Ponte Vedra Inn & Club is home to two private courses — the Ocean Course and the Lagoon Course — each offering its own unique challenges.

From Resort to Global Golf Destination
A game-changing addition arrived in 1980. Ponte Vedra became home to the iconic Tournament Players Club (TPC) Sawgrass. The venue would put the coastal community on the global golfing map and is now home to the PGA Tour headquarters and hosts THE PLAYERS Championship. TPC Sawgrass offers two courses, the Stadium Course and Dyes Valley Course. The Stadium Course’s design was unique at the time, providing mounds where spectators can stand and watch the action, like a stadium. It also features the signature island green 17th hole, recognized as one of the more challenging holes in the country. The courses are open to the public, providing a unique opportunity for any golfer to play in the footsteps of the pros.

Exploring TPC Sawgrass
Even if you don’t plan to play at TPC Sawgrass, a visit to the clubhouse is a must. This Mediterranean-style gem, spanning 77,000 square feet, was built in 2007 and completed in just 13 months to allow for no delays in its signature tournament. Inside the clubhouse, you’ll find a wealth of history on display, including golf clubs donated by the champions, artwork depicting iconic moments in tournament history and artifacts from the venue’s early days. Make a point to take a Storyteller tour, free for all visitors and offered seven days a week. You can also enjoy a meal or drink at the clubhouse restaurant Nineteen.
